5 Common CBD MythsMolly Roe
- CBD gets you high
For thousands of years, the cannabis plant has been used for medicinal purposes. Cannabis contains more than 80 compounds known as cannabinoids. Hemp, or CBD pre-rolls, are made with CBD flower instead of recreational or medicinal marijuana that contains high levels of THC.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most abundant compound in the plant, and is probably the most well-known; however, cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most abundant compound found in cannabis, and does not have the psychoactive effects of THC–this means it does not give users a “high” feeling.
- CBD is dangerous
A detailed report from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017 declared that “naturally occurring CBD is safe and well tolerated in humans and is not associated with any public health effects.” The report also stated that CBD is not addictive (see #4). In fact, smoking CBD pre-rolls boasts many health benefits. You can read more about those here.
- CBD has the same effect on everyone
How CBD works for each individual depends on many factors such as state of health, genetics and how an individual’s endocannabinoid system interacts with CBD. Some people may use CBD to bring relaxation and comfort to their day, while others use it to manage symptoms of disease and chronic pain.
Certain people’s endocannabinoid system may need more support than others. This all depends on environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors. CBD supports everyone’s endocannabinoid system differently, making CBD an adaptogen- this means it morphs to meet each individual’s needs in the body.
- CBD is addictive
A comprehensive report on CBD, led by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017, concluded that “in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.” Because CBD is not psychoactive, it provides very little to no rewarding properties in the way many addictive drugs do.
- All CBD is the same
In nature, CBD does not exist as a single compound; rather, it is found in plants along with hundreds of other cannabinoids. When extracted, you get CBD along with all the other cannabinoids. These are called full spectrum extracts.
On the other hand, CBD can be isolated to yield pure CBD; this is called CBD isolate. Niota CBD pre-rolls are made from pure CBD flower, making it an isolate.
