How CBD can help with migraines?Molly Roe
According to the Migraine Research Foundation, migraines affect approximately 39 million people in the United States and is the third most prevalent illness in the entire world. If you’ve ever suffered from a migraine, you know how painful they can be—a pounding headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound are all common symptoms of migraines.
Luckily, new studies show that CBD may help relieve the pain associated with migraines. In fact, a November 2019 study by the Journal of Pain, reported that cannabis use could reduce migraine severity by 50 percent. But how does CBD help relieve migraine pain in the body?
It starts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Cannabis can help reduce inflammation in the dura mater, a protective tissue covering the brain. This can help minimize the release of substances that cause inflammation in the brain, which contributes to migraine pain.
One cause of migraines may also be a deficiency in the cannabinoid anandamide. Anandamide is one of two cannabinoids that is naturally produced in the body and helps to reduce inflammation in the brain.
Doctors recommend using CBD as soon as symptoms of a migraine begin, but you should always speak to your doctor if you are using CBD with any other medication. While the current research is a great starting point, further research is needed to underscore the need for CBD as a possible treatment for migraine sufferers.
